In Malaysia, Atopic Eczema is a skin disorder that affects 2 in every 10 people in Malaysia and about 10% – 14% of children below the age of 14. It usually appears for the first time before your child is two. The good news is that most children who have eczema will grow out of the condition by the time they are in their teens. I am lucky that both my daughters do not have eczema, but I know how crazy stressful it is to have this skin disorder as a child because my own brother had it. Growing up, I saw how my mom tried many different type of creams and treatments for him. Thankfully, he has outgrown it by the time he was a teenager.

Unfortunately, for many others, there is no cure for eczema. It can only be managed by educating oneself about the different types of eczema and managing it by minimizing flare ups specifically with diet as well as how the skin comes in contact with water, clothes, soap, detergent etc.

Obviously, eczema is one of the reasons of night...

Bedtime Routine – Why Is It So Important?

bedtime routine Nov 05, 2020

Ever since I started sleep training my daughters, they look forward to bedtime routine the most because this is a special bonding time, a one-on-one with each of them, reading book a book or two, sing nursery rhymes, recite versus and counting from 1 to 100 for my 4 year old Ariyana. It’s special because there is no other time in the day that we do this and it helps them to wind down from an active state to sleepy state.

The key thing for a successful bedtime routine and no struggle is consistency. I do this every night without fail. Even when they have sleepovers at grandma’s once in a while, they will still get their books read to them, singing and so on. Nowadays, the association of the bedtime routine is so strong with sleep that they sometimes get sleepy when the bedtime routine is being carried out!

Our routine is pretty simple and calming. We start off by going to the loo for Ariyana and diaper change for Amelyn, my soon to be two year old. Next their teeth get...

I’ve come across many parents who have trouble putting their child to sleep. The common scenarios I hear are:

“My child fights and refuses to be put to sleep.”
“My child takes more than half an hour to drift off to sleep.”
“My child protests when I mention the word ‘sleep’.”

Getting enough sleep is vital to a child’s growth and development. Studies have shown that sleep-deprived kids get injured more often, they get sick more easily, their grades suffer and so do their moods. Temper tantrums escalation is usually caused by hunger or tiredness.Try these 5 tried-and-true strategies to make bedtime easier.

1. Watch Food & Drink Consumption

Large meals can make it difficult to sleep, so give your child some time between dinner and bedtime to digest. Make sure your child stays away from sugary snacks before bedtime and has no caffeine (soft drinks) at least six hours prior to going to sleep. There are anti-sleep foods to avoid...

The Nap Transition

nap Nov 05, 2020

I remember the time period when both my daughters were going through the nap transition being somewhat nightmarish. Just when I thought I had it all figured out with their sleep and naps, they decided that they don’t want to take that morning naps anymore. Then I was left unsure whether to keep them up til their next nap time or just keep trying to put them down to nap. If I waited, I would risk handling a very cranky and fussy baby. If I insisted they take their nap, they would be fussy anyway. So how did I handle the nap transition?

Most children transition from less one nap a day around specific ages. But every child is different with their nap needs and the table below gives a rough guide of how much your child should be napping. For Ariyana, she has always been a good sleeper so nap transition was not that bad. It was more complicated with Amelyn because being a spirited child, she never could stay asleep for long. So I followed their cues, and when the time came when...
